Could predictive marketing help your credit union grow loans and deposits and improve member retention in 2027? And how do you know whether the investment is worth it?

This four-step guide will help you build a business case for predictive marketing, including a break-even calculation you can use in conversations with your CFO or leadership team.

Predictive marketing uses predictive analytics to identify member needs, interests, and likelihood of leaving, then uses marketing automation to turn those insights into targeted campaigns.

Your credit union is ready to evaluate predictive marketing when it has three things in place: a measurable growth or retention goal, usable member data, and a way to turn predictive insights into automated campaigns. If one is missing, preparing first may be the better decision.

New to the technology? Start with our overview of [predictive analytics for credit unions](https://resources.prismacampaigns.com/blog/discover-the-power-of-predictive-analytics-for-your-credit-union). This guide focuses on evaluating the investment, not explaining the technology.

## Step 1: Connect the investment to one business goal

Start with a priority your credit union is already considering for 2027:

- Grow auto loan originations
- Increase deposits
- Improve retention within a specific member segment
- Free up marketing capacity for higher-value work.

Then ask: where could better audience selection and automated campaign execution make a measurable difference?

For example, if loan growth is the priority, predictive product recommendations could help identify members more likely to be interested in a lending product. Marketing automation could then help your team reach those audiences through coordinated communications.

A specific goal makes it easier to define success and evaluate whether the investment is worthwhile.

## Step 2: Measure what your current process costs

Before proposing new technology, establish what your existing approach requires.

Document three things:

- Staff time: Hours spent preparing campaigns, building audiences, requesting data, coordinating approvals, and launching communications. Include recurring work, not just initial setup.
- Campaign performance: Current audience sizes, response rates, applications, funded loans, or opened accounts, depending on the objective.
- Timing limitations: Opportunities to reach members earlier or more consistently that may be difficult to pursue with the current process.

This gives you a baseline to measure future improvements.

Without it, you can’t reliably determine whether a new approach improves performance or reduces operational effort.

## Step 3: Calculate your break-even point

Instead of assuming predictive marketing will generate a positive return, calculate what it would take for the investment to pay for itself.

Start with two inputs:

- **Total annual investment**: Platform fees, implementation, integrations, training, and ongoing management.
- **Estimated average net contribution per additional funded loan**: What one additional loan is expected to contribute financially after relevant costs and expected credit losses. Your credit union’s Finance team can help establish this figure. Use a consistent time frame for costs and benefits.

### How to apply the calculation

Use the total annual investment from the proposal you’re evaluating and your credit union’s estimated average net contribution per additional funded loan.

Additional funded loans needed = Total annual investment / Estimated average net contribution per additional funded loan

The result tells you how many additional loans your credit union would need to originate, beyond its existing baseline, to cover the investment.

A simple way to picture it: Suppose the annual investment equals the estimated net contribution of 50 additional funded loans. Your credit union would need to originate 50 incremental loans per year to break even. If it currently funds 1,000 auto loans annually, that represents a 5% increase in funded loan volume.

This is a hypothetical illustration of the method, not a Prisma Campaigns price, customer result, or industry benchmark.

Then compare that percentage with the performance you documented in Step 2. Is that level of increase realistically achievable with your existing audience, resources, and lending goals?

### What about time savings?

If automation reduces the hours your team spends preparing campaigns, that benefit may strengthen the business case.

Time saved doesn’t necessarily mean money saved. If automation reduces actual expenses, subtract those savings from the total annual investment before calculating break-even. Otherwise, consider how the additional marketing capacity could support more campaigns, better targeting, or other measurable outcomes.

### Two cautions before presenting the numbers

- **Count only incremental loans**. They must represent loans beyond what the credit union would have funded without the investment.
- **Use net contribution, not gross revenue**. The estimated average contribution per additional loan should reflect your institution’s financial assumptions, including relevant costs and expected credit losses.

You can apply the same approach to other objectives, such as deposit growth or member retention, using the appropriate financial contribution for each outcome.

If break-even appears achievable under reasonable assumptions, you have a starting point for a business case, not proof of a return.

## **Step 4: Decide whether to move forward, prepare, or wait**

Not every credit union will reach the same conclusion.

| **Decision** | **When it makes sense** | **Next step** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Move forward** | Clear objective, usable data, a defined campaign opportunity, and a credible business case | Start with one initiative and measure results against your baseline |
| **Prepare first** | The opportunity is promising, but data access, integrations, or internal resources need attention | Address the gaps and establish when to reassess |
| **Wait and reassess** | The required improvement is unrealistic, benefits are uncertain, or other priorities offer greater value | Document the decision and revisit when conditions change |

One factor to consider is how predictive insights become campaigns.

A predictive model may identify members who are more likely to need a product, but Marketing still needs a way to act on that information.

A marketing automation platform with integrated predictive capabilities can help connect audience selection and campaign execution. Any implementation should also align with your institution’s data governance, compliance, and approval requirements.

## Where Prisma Campaigns fits

Prisma Campaigns is an omnichannel marketing automation platform purpose-built for credit unions and community banks.

Its [predictive analytics capabilities](https://prismacampaigns.com/offer/predictive-analytics/) include product recommendations, churn predictions, and predictive personas, helping financial institutions identify potential opportunities within their member data.

Prisma Campaigns also helps marketing teams use information from existing systems to build audiences, automate campaigns, and coordinate communications across email, SMS, online banking banners, push notifications, and direct mail, depending on available integrations.

By combining predictive capabilities with campaign execution, Prisma Campaigns helps credit unions turn insights into targeted marketing activities without managing separate tools for predictions and automation.

## Start with one measurable opportunity

You don’t need to justify transforming your entire marketing operation.

Choose one initiative, establish its current performance and operational costs, calculate what improvement would justify the investment, and define how you’ll measure the results.

That gives leadership a proposal to evaluate against your credit union’s priorities, resources, and financial assumptions.

A strong business case gives your credit union a clear way to decide whether predictive marketing belongs in its 2027 plans, based on measurable opportunities rather than assumptions.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a predictive marketing business case include?

A measurable business objective, current campaign performance, operational costs, total investment requirements, potential efficiencies, and a break-even calculation. Document assumptions so leadership can evaluate the proposal.

### How do you calculate the break-even point for predictive marketing?

Divide the total annual investment by the estimated average net contribution of one additional outcome, such as a funded loan. If automation creates measurable operational savings, subtract them from the investment first. The result estimates how many additional outcomes are needed to cover the investment.

### How much does predictive marketing cost for a credit union?

Costs depend on the platform, institution size, integrations, implementation requirements, and ongoing support. A complete budget should include more than the platform subscription.

### What data does a credit union need to get started?

Typically, credit unions need reliable member and product information from existing systems, plus the ability to share that information with the marketing platform. Specific requirements depend on the predictive capabilities and use cases being evaluated.
