Austin hosted the ABA Bank Marketing Conference 2026 from September 23–25, and it was our first time attending in person.

At the Prisma Campaigns booth, we welcomed attendees for professional headshots and conversations about what marketing teams are working through right now. Beyond the booth, we joined sessions, reconnected with industry friends, and enjoyed Austin along the way.

One theme kept coming back: financial institutions have more data and technology available than ever, but turning those resources into relevant, coordinated, and measurable marketing is still a challenge.

Across the sessions and conversations, one question kept surfacing: How can marketers make better use of the data and technology they already have?

## From campaign calendars to customer signals

The session *Stop Leaving Revenue on the Table: How Precision Marketing Turns Customer Behavior Into Strategy* highlighted an interesting issue: the role the traditional campaign calendar still plays in marketing decisions.

One point mentioned during the discussion prompted us to reconsider a familiar marketing habit: how much does the campaign calendar determine what customers hear from their financial institution?

A calendar can help organize marketing activity, but customer needs do not necessarily follow that schedule. Changes in transaction patterns, product relationships, digital behavior, and other signals can give marketers a different starting point: what may be relevant based on what is happening in the customer relationship now.

That shift also changes data's role. Rather than using it only to refine the audience for a campaign already planned, data can help inform which opportunities are worth communicating in the first place.

This distinction becomes particularly important as financial institutions move toward more personalized marketing. Relevance is not only about reaching a narrower audience. It is also about understanding why a communication makes sense at that particular point in the customer relationship.

For a deeper look at this approach, we have explored how financial institutions can move from individual campaigns toward [lifecycle marketing](https://resources.prismacampaigns.com/blog/lifecycle-marketing-for-financial-institutions-moving-beyond-one-off-campaigns), where communications evolve as customer needs and behaviors change.

## Connecting the pieces marketers already have

Our booth conversations raised a related question. Many of the bank marketers we spoke with weren’t starting from a lack of technology. They already had multiple systems in place.

What came up repeatedly was the challenge of connecting those pieces in a way marketing can actually use.

Customer data may live across different systems, while communications are managed through separate platforms and channels. In some conversations, teams were using only a few channels. In others, predictive insights were not yet part of how marketing identified potential opportunities.

The question, then, is not simply what technology is available. It is how easily marketers can move from information to execution.

Can an insight become an audience without another manual process? Can that audience move into a coordinated journey across the channels that make sense? Can marketers see what customers do after receiving those communications?

Those connections turn data into day-to-day marketing action, not information marketers know exists but struggle to activate.

For teams working through this challenge, we have also explored what it takes to [operationalize lifecycle marketing](https://resources.prismacampaigns.com/blog/operationalizing-lifecycle-marketing-in-financial-institutions) across data, systems, teams, and channels.

## Measuring what marketing contributes

The session *Your Sales Team Needs More Than Flyers: How Marketing Can Drive More Loans, Deposits and Revenue* focused on another important question: what can marketing contribute beyond individual campaign deliverables?

Marketing may be asked for an ad, flyer, sponsorship, or other asset, but its contribution can extend much further. Sales enablement, customer experience, product strategy, branding, training, and closer collaboration between marketing and sales can all connect marketing activity more directly to broader business goals.

That makes measurement particularly important.

Opens, clicks, and engagement metrics help marketers understand how people interact with a campaign, but they are only part of the picture. Financial institutions also need ways to understand what happens next: whether marketing activity contributes to funded loans, deposits, product adoption, or deeper customer relationships.

This challenge extends beyond the conversations in Austin. Research published by the American Bankers Association in 2026 found that just over 26% of bank marketers surveyed were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their organization’s ability to use data to connect marketing activities to sales outcomes.\*

Closing that gap does more than help marketing demonstrate its contribution. It gives teams better information for deciding where to invest, what to adjust, and which approaches are producing meaningful results.

## Celebrating great bank marketing

The conference was also an opportunity to recognize the work happening across the industry.

During Thursday’s lunch, ABA presented its inaugural Bank Marketing Excellence Awards, recognizing campaigns across Brand Awareness, Customer Adoption and Loyalty, Digital Acquisition, Employee Engagement, and Product Launch.

Beyond celebrating creative work, the awards highlighted something that came up in many conversations throughout the conference: strong marketing starts with a clear objective and must demonstrate meaningful impact.

It was a great moment to celebrate the teams behind that work and see the range of ideas being put into practice across bank marketing.

## The conversations beyond the sessions

Of course, some of the best parts of a conference happen outside the meeting rooms.
From live music at Antone’s to sunset conversations at Zanzibar, the conference also gave us a chance to reconnect with industry friends and familiar faces. It’s always nice to cross paths again with people we’ve gotten to know through the industry.

Austin made a great setting for those conversations, whether they happened at an evening reception, between sessions, or back at our booth.

We appreciated everyone who stopped by Prima’s booth, whether it was to talk marketing, learn more about Prisma Campaigns, or update their professional headshot.

## From information to action

Looking back on our time in Austin, the opportunity we see is not simply having access to more customer data, technology, or channels. It is being able to connect them in ways that make marketing more relevant and its impact easier to understand.

Customer data and behavioral signals can help surface opportunities. Segmentation and predictive insights can help determine which communications may be relevant. Connected channels can turn those insights into coordinated customer experiences. And measurement can show marketers what happens after those communications go out.

This is where marketing automation can play an important role. By connecting data and insights with dynamic audiences, automated journeys, and communications across email, SMS, digital banking, push notifications, and direct mail, financial institutions can move more efficiently from information to action.

For marketers, that means being better equipped to respond to what customers need, coordinate how the institution communicates with them, and understand the business impact of those efforts.

If your team is exploring how to connect data, campaigns, and channels more effectively, we’d love to keep the conversation going.
